Financially Motivated APT-style Actors Target Retail & Hospitality

A new wave of financially motivated, APT-style group, of cyber threat actors are targeting large restaurant chains with phishing emails containing malicious attachments. As early as April 2017, a new wave of the group's activity has been targeting the retail and hospitality sectors. The APT-style group has been active since 2015 and is known for their use of the Carbanak malware. The most recent campaigns leverage two new RTF droppers to deliver a variant of a known backdoor. Early campaigns were known for targeting financial institutions and banks; in 2015, targeting European banks through a banking application called the Internet Front End Banking System (iFOBS). New Kids on the Block

Wapack Labs is researching a new card vendor in the underground going by the name “18th Street Gang Shop” (18SGS). The actual 18th Street Gang is one of the largest youth gangs in the western hemisphere, and has close ties to the Mexican Mafia. It is unclear if the actual street gang is operating this site or if someone is co-opting their name. Users may visit the 18SGS shop, create a free account, and access their stolen credit card database. Wapack Labs filtered records and discovered thousands of credit cards belonging to numerous U.S. banks and one major home improvement store.

Venmo Fraud Scam

Venmo is a mobile payment service owned by PayPal that allows users to transfer money using a mobile phone app or web interface. Threat actors have been noted purchasing reloadable gift cards online with stolen bank funds, and then transferring the money into a Venmo account. From the Venmo account, the actor will execute a wire transfer to another account, often an offshore bank in a country with lax banking rules. Venmo significantly reduces the time it takes to cash out stolen funds, which makes it harder for victim banks to stop illicit transfers. Financial sector scrutiny of the Venmo service is recommended.

For Sale: W-2s and the GozNym Botnet

On February 17, 2017 Wapack Analysts observed a deep web market vendor advertising 2016 U.S. W-2’s with dates of birth (DOB) and U.S./EU bank accounts for sale. Additionally, the vendor is also selling the GozNym botnet. The vendor maintains good feedback in deep web markets. GozNym, though underground, received media attention in late September 2016 when CISCO’s Talos team cracked the Domain Generation Algorithm (DGA) of GozNym. This exposure may be the reason for the vendor's current public sale - utilizing dark web market escrow systems. Though the vendor sells on these sites, business is conducted over Jabber/E-Mail using PGP encryption...READ MORE
